Here is to another year.

leave a comment »

I am still every age that I have been. Because I was once a child, I am always a child. Because I was once a searching adolescent, given to moods and ecstasies, these are still part of me, and always will be… This does not mean that I ought to be trapped or enclosed in any of these ages…the delayed adolescent, the childish adult, but that they are in me to be drawn on; to forget is a form of suicide… Far too many people misunderstand what “putting away childish things” means, and think that forgetting what it is like to think and feel and touch and smell and taste and see and hear like a three-year-old or a thirteen-year-old or a twenty-three-year-old means being grownup. When I’m with these people I, like the kids, feel that if this is what it means to be a grown-up, then I don’t ever want to be one. Instead of which, if I can retain a child’s awareness and joy, and *be* fifty-one, then I will really learn what it means to be grownup.

We are the nation. Of domination. Ohhhhh, not really. But cool hair.

with 2 comments

My birthday is coming up soon (the 21st, just in case you were curious) and this is probably the first time I’ve been this uninterested in “my special day”.

Is it just me or is 19 one of the most boring ages to turn? It’s like 17. You’ve just turned 16 and it’s like, “Woo, yay! 16! I can drive!” but the next year nothing special happens. Then you turn 18 and it’s, “I’m an adult! Oh no! Responsibilities! But wait, I still live with my mom. No worries!” After that there’s 19. Which, to me, is pretty much, “Congrats. You’re a year away from 20. Whoop-di-doo.”

I want to do something cool to make this birthday interesting, but I abhor having a winter birthday. Especially one in a city where the weather forecast predicts rain for the entire week until Christmas. I was considering dying my hair a pale, pastel pink a la Marie Antoinette back in October but didn’t have the guts. I kind of want that kind of extreme change, but because I have very dark hair I’m terrified of ruining it with bleach.

Having hair that makes you look like you just stepped out of a cartoon looks like so much fuuuuuuuuuuuuun. But I like being nooooormallllllll. Whiiiine.

Gift wrapping from a Japanese magazine.

with 2 comments

No doubt I obviously find Japanese magazines nifty, but this is my favorite one today; especially now that the holidays are here. I like origami but when it comes to flimsy pieces of wrapping paper I am not so handy with the folding and the not-so-perfectly-shaped boxes I currently own. I tried a couple of these today but I ultimately failed and will wait until I get better boxes. Yeah, I like to blame inanimate objects.

I speak from personal experience that the first one is ultimately very frustrating if you don’t have a perfectly flat surface or are just easily frustrated like myself on some days.. Not all, just some…

Craving summer, though snow is good too.

with one comment

Being sick certainly makes a person wish for warmer weather. It started snowing a tiny, tiny bit here so snow is an OK alternative. Just not on my birthday. Last year it completely snowed me in and I at least want to be able to leave the apartment and get pastries.

I want a yacht and really that’s not a lot.

Christmas is coming, oh my. I haven’t done any Christmas shopping… But I have been listening to Christmas songs. And there’s no guessing which my favorite is. It is quite obvious. Oh Eartha Kitt, may you rest in peace.
